Behind the songs
Every song has a story
Be a Goldfish
“Be a Goldfish” is a joyful, healing song inspired by my favorite TV character, Ted Lasso, and his unforgettable reminder to let go, move forward, and not carry the weight of yesterday.
The lyrics came to me almost like a download. I wrote them quickly on both sides of a piece of notebook paper while standing at my kitchen island, feeling as though the message was being given to me to share with others.
With a spirit of lightness, hope, and emotional release, “Be a Goldfish” is about choosing joy, forgiving yourself, shaking off the past, and returning to the present moment. It carries a playful message with a deeper heart: life is easier when we stop replaying every mistake and allow ourselves to begin again.
The Work We Couldn’t Do Lyrics
I wrote this as a thank-you to the men and women who served, protected, rescued, and showed up when the rest of us couldn’t. If someone in your life served this country, I hope you’ll share this with them.
“The Work We Couldn’t Do” is a song of gratitude from the hearts of ordinary Americans to the extraordinary people who have done the jobs many of us simply could not do. Whether because of the physical demands, emotional weight, danger, sacrifice, or the courage required, others stepped forward where we could not. The song honors members of the military, police officers, firefighters, and all who have carried responsibilities that protect our communities, our freedoms, and the everyday lives we cherish. It is a humble thank-you from those who recognize that because others were willing to do the hard work, we are able to live the lives we love.
Anywhere — EDM Version
“Anywhere” began with a melody I had written years ago, long before I knew exactly what the song was meant to become. Later, the lyrics came to me quickly, almost as if they were meant to be written. The song grew from a place of wondering where love, peace, and goodness can still be found in a world that can feel heavy, divided, and uncertain.
On Mother’s Day, my son, who had been producing music came over and helped me begin producing the song, which made it even more meaningful. The heart of “Anywhere” is the reminder that love and peace are not always far away — they can be found in the earth, the sky, the trees, the quiet, and the simple beauty around us. To me, this song feels like a breath, a prayer, and a reminder that even when the world feels dark, beauty is still waiting to be noticed — anywhere.
A Gentle Kind of Strong
I wrote “A Gentle Kind of Strong” for my grandson. The inspiration came from a photo of him when he was about three years old, dressed in a superhero mask and costume, posing with his little fist doubled up as if he were trying to look tough. But with his blond curls peeking out and the sweetness still shining in his eyes, I saw something even more powerful than toughness — I saw a tender, loving heart.
The song also comes from a real and painful moment when my grandson was not invited to a friend’s birthday party. I wanted to write something that could comfort him through that kind of hurt — the kind many kids experience as they grow up, especially during the rougher years of junior high school.
This song is also a reflection of how I see him as a person. He is strong, but gentle when it is appropriate; tough when he needs to be, but still tender and loving at heart. I wanted the song to remind him that real strength does not have to mean acting hard or hiding your feelings. It can be gentle. It can be kind. And it can still be strong.
